  • A passport that is valid for a minimum of six months beyond your departure date and with two blank consecutive pages

  • Visas are required by almost all nationalities visiting Tanzania, and generally cost between US$50 and US$100. To determine whether you require a visa to enter Tanzania please contact the Tanzanian embassy in your home country. The new e-visa system is recommended for obtaining a visa in advance of departure. Alternatively, some nationalities can apply for a visa at one of the main ports of international entry to Tanzania: Dar es Salaam Airport, Zanzibar Airport, Kilimanjaro Airport and Namanga border crossing (from Kenya). At times there may be long queues resulting in a delay of up to 2 hours. If obtained on entry, visas must be paid for in cash in US$.

  • E-visas for Tanzania.

Applications

Applications must be made by the individual traveler here: https://visa.immigration.go.tz/  Some nationalities can also apply for visas in person at a local Tanzania Embassy or High Commission.

Tanzania yellow fever requirements

Proof of yellow fever vaccination is only required upon arrival if you are travelling from a country with a risk of the virus. This list currently does not include any country in Europe and the United States. (View the full list of Yellow Fever high-risk countries).

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is only required for travellers one year of age and older coming from – or who are in airport transit for more than 12 hours within – a country with risk of yellow fever transmission.

NB: For information about Yellow Fever Requirement in Tanzania, please visit the Ministry of Health Website: http://moh.go.tz/en/yellow-fever-entry

HEALTH

Tanzania has a tropical climate and different bacteria, flora, and fauna than most visitors are accustomed to, so it is advisable to take a few health precautions when travelling to make sure that your trip goes as comfortably and smoothly as possible.

  • MALARIA

Malaria is usually top of visitors’ worries, and prevention goes a long way towards keeping you protected. Make sure to visit your doctor to get prescription for the anti-malarial drugs that best suit you.

  • VACCINATIONS AND YELLOW FEVER

For all vaccinations, please consult a medical professional at least six weeks before your date of departure. The rules however change regularly. If you are in transit in Nairobi to mainland Tanzania you will not be asked for a yellow fever certificate on arrival. If you stay longer than simply to change planes, e.g. overnight or a full day in the city, or if you are flying via Nairobi to Zanzibar, a yellow fever certificate (or medical exemption certificate) is required on entry.

  • MEDICAL FACILITIES

Good medical facilities and pharmacies are available in the major cities however, we advise that you bring your own small medical kit as camps and lodges may have limited supplies (painkillers, cough drops etc).

WATER

Do not drink tap water anywhere, always drinks bottled water.

MONEY

The Tanzania shilling (Tsh or TZS), divided into 100 cents, is the national currency. There is no restriction on the importation of foreign currency. The import or the export of Tanzanian shillings is prohibited. Visitors can change their foreign currency at any of the Bureaux de Change, which give a better rate than the banks, and at certain hotels. This money can be used for personal expenses like shopping, meals and drinks in town restaurants or safari lodges. (Please note that US$ notes printed PRIOR to 2006 are not accepted. We recommend a combination of cash and travellers cheques, preferably in small denomination notes (more cash) – otherwise you will end up carrying large amounts of Shillings around! Any excess shillings can be changed back to US$ at your hotel/Bureau de Change etc, - you get the slightly lower rate for small denomination notes. Banks and Bureaux de Change are available at airports and all major towns. Credit cards (Access, MasterCard, Visa, American-Express, and Eurocard) are accepted only at major lodges, hotels, and travel agents. A surcharge may be added for this service. ATM and 24-hour cash machines are available in branches of major banks. Travellers’ cheques in pounds sterling or US dollars are recommended, though it may be difficult to exchange them outside the main cities. Banking hours are from Monday – Friday 8.30 am – 3.00 pm. A few branches in the major towns are open until 4.00 pm.

CLIMATE

Tanzania’s climate is predominantly tropical. Coastal areas are usually hot and humid, but on the beaches a sea breeze cools the air considerably. The average day temperature is 30 degrees centigrade. Tanzania has two rainy seasons – the long rains from late March to May and the short rains from November to January. The long rains fall in heavy downpours, often accompanied by violent storms, but the short rains tend to be much less severe. The hottest time of the year is from December to March, before the long rains begin. The coolest months are June, July and August, when the weather is often overcast. In the high-altitude areas such as Kilimanjaro and the Ngorongoro Highlands, temperatures can fall below freezing.

AMRED Flying Doctors Services

While planning your safari inTanzania, you might worry about having a medical emergency in the middle of nowhere. Luckily, the AMREF Flying Doctors are here to save the day, as they offer a flying ambulance service with doctors and pilots on standby 24 hours a day in the whole of East Africa. For 20 USD per person for 30 days, you can travel worry-free to Kenya Tanzania and Zanzibar. Africa Live, a safari company, integrates this service into their safaris to ensure travelers' safety and peace of mind.

Some limitations Mind you, Flying Doctors always assesses what help is needed and only covers the emergency assistance and transport. Costs for a visa (when coming from outside of Kenya and being flown to Nairobi), and costs for the hospital and your treatment are on you. It doesn’t replace the need for health and/ or travel insurance. AMREF Flying Doctors can help smoothen the process for the visa, however, making sure you reach the hospital in time. People doing mountain climbs need to be aware that the Flying Doctors Insurance does not cover mountain evacuations. Therefore, please make sure that your travel insurance covers this type of evacuation.
